Prof. Christa Thöne-Reineke

Prof. Christa Thöne-Reineke

Prof. Christa Thöne-Reineke is a veterinarian by training and a scientist with passion focusing on animal behavior, animal welfare with focus on the 3Rs in science and education, ethics and cardiovascular sciences. After finishing her PhD in 1997 at the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Biochemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin, Christa Thöne-Reineke was appointed as scientist and animal welfare officer at the German Institute of Nutrition or the Charité Berlin. Since 2014 she has been the head of the Institute for Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior and Laboratory Animal Science, Freie Universität Berlin and is involved in several interdisciplinary, innovative 3R projects and networks e.g. Science of Intelligence , 3R-SMART or BB3R research platform. She is convinced that knowledge protects animals and that animal welfare and good science go hand in hand.

Prof. Stefan Hippenstiel

Prof. Stefan Hippenstiel

Prof. Stefan Hippenstiel is a professor of experimental infectiology and respiratory medicine at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the spokesperson of Charité 3R. Stefan Hippenstiel studied medicine in Giessen and Vienna and did his medical specialty training in internal medicine in Giessen and Berlin. He is involved in several interdisciplinary projects and the scientific coordinator of the transregional collaborative research center SFB-TR48. Stefan and his group are convinced that original human tissues and cells are a powerful way to understand human diseases and to foster translation into the clinical practice.

Dr. Chantra Eskes

Dr. Chantra Eskes

Dr. Chantra Eskes is an internationally renowned expert in the field of toxicology and is currently appointed as Executive Director of the Swiss 3R Competence Centre (3RCC). She holds a PhD in Toxicology and has been working at ECVAM (2003-2009) on eye irritation and as manager and consultant at SeCAM Services & Consultation for Alternative Methods (2010-2018). Between 2012 and 2016, Chantra Eskes was the president of the European Society of Toxicology in Vitro (ESTIV).

Dr. Christopher Fassbender

Dr. Christopher Fassbender

Dr. Christopher Faßbender has a PhD in biology and several years of research and teaching experience in ecotoxicology and zoology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. During his doctoral program, Dr. Faßbender investigated genotoxic effects on fertility, reproduction, development, and histology in zebrafish. Since 2014, he has advised the PETA International Science Consortium Ltd. on animal testing issues and animal-free approaches to toxicology and ecotoxicology. Currently, he is focusing on minimizing the use of animals in chemical testing at the OECD and EU levels. He is confident that both human health and the environment will be better protected with the application of risk assessment strategies that combine available data of in vitro and in silico methods instead of using animal tests.

Dr. Babara Birk

Dr. Babara Birk

Dr. Barbara Birk studied veterinary medicine in Hanover. After her PhD in basic research in Physiology in Munich and three years in a small animal practice in Frankfurt, she joined in 2006 the CRO “Pharmacelsus GmbH” in Saarbruecken. She headed the department “in vivo Pharmacology” focusing on kinetic studies in laboratory animals and established several methods in the context of 2 R´s “Reduction and Refinement”. In 2011 she moved to BASF SE, Consumer Safety - Agriculture Solutions as Regulatory Scientist. After development of an alternative method to replace goat metabolism studies, she joined in 2016 the Experimental Toxicology and Ecology at BASF SE focusing now entirely on the “third R - Replacement” - on the development of alternative toxicological methods.
